Fira Santorini Greece Day Trip

Published on October 14, 2014 by admin

A Day in Fira Santorini Greece

We arrived at Fira Santorini Greece in July while on a cruise of the Mediterranean. We took a small boat from the ship and arrived at the port in Fira. Upon arrival to the port, there is a steep cliff side we had to ascend to get to the town of Fira. You can either take a donkey up the side of the cliff, walk or take a cable car. We took the cable car up into the town.

View from Fira Town

Once we got to the top, the view from the town was spectacular. We enjoyed magnificent views of the Mediterranean from the top of the cliff side. This is definitely a photo moment that cannot be missed!

We spent the day in Fira and didn’t venture outside of the town. The town centre (Plateia Theotokopoulou) has bus and taxi station, banks and pharmacies if you want to venture outside of the town or get money or supplies.

Seafood Lunch

We enjoyed a fresh lunch of fish and salad at one of the main restaurants in town (I cannot remember the name of restaurant). Most of the restaurants seem to offer the same range of fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes. You can’t go wrong ordering a Greek salad – I became addicted to them by the end of our trip!

After lunch, we took our time walking around the town and looking in different shops which generally seem to cater to all the tourists. You can find jewellery, artwork, olive oil and trinkets on display.

Back to the Port & Past the Donkeys

Finally we made our way back to the port. Just as you have to make your way up, you have to make your way back down. We decided to walk down to the port along the side of the cliff. We saw many donkeys parked along the path (along with their droppings). The donkeys are used to transport people up and down the cliff and looked extremely thirsty! If I had to do it again, I would have waited in the line to take the cable car back down. The walk down the cliff was hard on our knees and hot.

If you get the chance to visit Fira and have more time then us, I recommend visiting neighbouring towns in Santorini such as Oia. This town is supposedly very beautiful (located on the Southeast of the island).

Also, I did notice some really nice restaurants perched on the side of the cliff in Thira. If you have time to book one in advance you will have incredible views of the Mediterranean while enjoying your meal.

Have you been to Fira in Santorini?

I would love to hear your stories about travelling to Fira or advice to other travellers thinking about going there.
