Vatnajökull National Park Glacier Tour

Snowmobiling in Iceland

I went snowmobiling in Iceland with my parents and husband in May as part of a Vatnajökull National Park Glacier Tour. What an exhilarating experience! We visited the Vatnajökull National Park and felt like we were on top of the world. The Vatnajökull Glacier is Europe’s largest glacier with a surface area of 8,100 km and a thickness of 400-600m. The endless views of white snow and mountains were humbling.

We went through the following tour operatior – glacierjeeps.is. We showed up at their residence around 10am (next to Vagnsstaðir hostel which they also manage) and were given equipment. This included: snow suit, helmet and snow boots.

After putting on the gear, they take you up in an enormous jeep (a monster truck with super large wheels) and you climb a mountain until their vehicle is on the glacier itself. The ride to the top of the glacier was an experience with beautiful views from below and steep inclines to get our adrenaline pumping.

Mountain Peaks

Once we reached the glacier, our snowmobiles were waiting for us. I let my husband drive and I hung on the back of him and enjoyed the ride. We followed the two guides (one on snowmobile in front and one in the back).

They took us up the white snow until we reached a stunning mountain top peak. We had time to get out and take pictures of this view before getting back on our snowmobiles and heading back to the trucks.

Timing & Prices

The entire tour took about two hours and we spent about one hour on the glacier itself. It cost us ÍKR 20.500 per person (£105 GBP each).

Final Thoughts

This tour was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. Being on top of a glacier felt like being on another planet. I have never been somewhere with so many white expanses and felt so small in a land of immense ice sheets.
